Summary
Ismail Sabri Yaakob (born 1960) is a Malaysian politician and lawyer who served as the country's ninth prime minister from August 2021 to November 2022. Born at Temerloh, Pahang, the son of a rubber tapper, he entered parliament for Bera in 2004, held a series of cabinet posts, led the parliamentary opposition, and became the public face of Malaysia's COVID-19 response as senior minister for security and then deputy prime minister for just forty days, before succeeding Muhyiddin Yassin under his "Keluarga Malaysia" (Malaysian Family) concept. 1 2
Early life and education
Ismail Sabri bin Yaakob was born on 18 January 1960 at Temerloh, Pahang. His father, Yaakob Abdul Rahman, worked as a rubber tapper, and the family came originally from Kelantan. Educated at schools in Temerloh and Kuantan — as a schoolboy he hawked limes and fish at market to help the family — he read law at the University of Malaya and began his legal career as a lawyer in 1985, before entering politics full-time. 1 3
Political career
Ismail Sabri was elected MP for Bera in 2004 and from 2008 held successive portfolios in the governments of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Najib Razak, among them youth and sports, domestic trade, agriculture, and rural and regional development. After the government's fall in 2018 he served as Leader of the Opposition from March 2019 to February 2020. In Muhyiddin Yassin's government he was Senior Minister for Security and the prominent daily face of the COVID-19 briefings, and in July 2021 he was made deputy prime minister, holding the post for only forty days — the shortest tenure in Malaysian history. 1
Prime minister
When Muhyiddin's majority collapsed and he resigned, Ismail Sabri secured the support of the most MPs and was sworn in as ninth prime minister on 21 August 2021. Governing under his "Keluarga Malaysia" concept, he lifted the Movement Control Order as vaccination expanded, oversaw the Twelfth Malaysia Plan, and amended the constitution to grant equal status to the East Malaysian states. His term ended after his coalition's decisive loss in the November 2022 general election, when Anwar Ibrahim succeeded him.
