عز الدين عبد الهادي الحنبلي

c. 1190 CE · 586 AH

Izz al-Din Abd al-Hadi b. Sharaf al-Islam the Hanbali; jurist, preacher, brave, beautiful-voiced in the Qur'an, immensely strong and stern upon the Sunna — wonders are told of his strength: he dueled a Frankish horseman and struck him with a mace that split the rider's back and the horse's together, and witnesses saw him lift the stone over the Damascus mosque's well and carry it steps before setting it back. He accompanied Asad al-Din Shirkuh to Egypt, began a madrasa there and died before its completion; he died in Egypt in 586 1.

Summary

'Izz al-Din 'Abd al-Hadi ibn Sharaf al-Islam al-Hanbali; faqih, preacher, brave and fine-voiced in the Qur'an, of prodigious strength and stern for the Sunna — marvellous tales are told of his strength: he once faced a Frankish horseman and struck him with his mace, cleaving both his back and the horse's so that both fell; he had come to Egypt in Asad al-Din Shirkuh's company, and a crowd watched him lift the stone covering the Damascus mosque's well, carry it some steps and set it back; he built a madrasa in Egypt and died before its completion — he is the brother of Najm al-Din mentioned before him; he died in Egypt in 586. 1
