Julaybib

جليبيب

Medina

A Companion whom Abu Ishaq al-Heweny cites as evidence that a friend of God need not be handsome: the Prophet ﷺ arranged his marriage after the young woman said 'give me to him, he will not let me be lost', and after a campaign he was found killed beside seven men he had killed, and the Prophet said Julaybib (may God be pleased with him) was of him and he of Julaybib, as al-Heweny tells it from Sahih Muslim and the Musnad of Ahmad.

Summary

Julaybib was a Companion whom Abu Ishaq al-Heweny cites in the reflection "On the friends of God" from Sayd al-Khatir as evidence that beauty of form is not a condition of being a friend of God: he is certain that Julaybib was one, though he was not handsome. 1 2 He says the story of his death is in Sahih Muslim, that its first part is given in full in the Musnad of Ahmad with Muslim's chain, and that Ahmad's version is long while Muslim took its end. 1 3

The marriage

Al-Heweny relates that Julaybib used to joke with women, and that one of the Companions told his wife not to let him in. 4 Then the Prophet asked a man for his daughter's hand, and made clear that he wanted her for Julaybib; the man referred the matter to her mother, who refused, since she had turned away suitors of higher standing. The daughter said from behind the curtain: would you refuse the Messenger of God his command? Give me to him, for he will not let me be lost. 5 6 7 Al-Heweny links her answer to the verse that it is not for a believing man or woman, when God and His Messenger have decided a matter, to have a choice in it, and says no one knows what good or harm lies beneath the strap of his own sandal. 8 He says one narrator asked Thabit al-Bunani what the Prophet prayed for the bride, and was told of a prayer that good be poured upon her; he calls this part mursal, and says she became one of the most sought-after widows in Medina. 9 10

His death

In his telling, after a campaign the Prophet asked three times whether anyone was missing, then said that he missed Julaybib; they found him killed beside seven men he had killed. The Prophet stood over him and said that Julaybib was of him and he of Julaybib, and he had no bier but the Prophet's two forearms. 11 12 13 From this al-Heweny is certain that he was one of the friends of God. 13 (needs_source: al-Heweny does not name the campaign in which Julaybib was killed, and the museum's page does not yet cite an independent source.)
