Summary

Mahmud ibn Maslama (may God be pleased with him) ibn Salama, al-Ansari, brother of Muhammad ibn Maslama (may God be pleased with him) — a Companion who witnessed Uhud, the Trench, al-Hudaybiyya and Khaybar, and was martyred at Khaybar 1.

His entry in al-Isaba

Ibn Hajar says: the authorities list him among the Companions, martyred in the Prophet ﷺ's lifetime — so Musa ibn Uqba in al-Maghazi from Ibn Shihab, likewise Abu al-Aswad from Urwa, and Muhammad ibn Ishaq and others 1. Ibn Ishaq says the first fortress of Khaybar to be conquered was Na'im's fort, and it was there that Mahmud ibn Maslama was killed: a millstone was dropped on him and killed him 1. Ibn al-Kalbi says Muhammad ibn Maslama was struck from the fortress by a stone that damaged his eyes — Marhab threw it — so the Prophet turned to his brother and said "tomorrow your brother's killer will be killed", and so it was 1.

His martyrdom on Ibn Sa'd's account

Ibn Sa'd says Mahmud witnessed Uhud, the Trench, al-Hudaybiyya and Khaybar, and was killed that day a martyr: Marhab let down a millstone on him that struck his head, shattered the helmet onto his skull and made the skin of his brow fall over his face; he was brought to the Prophet, who set the skin back so that it returned as it was and bound it with a cloth; Mahmud lingered three days then died, and Muhammad killed Marhab that very day, with Ali ibn Abi Talib (may God be pleased with him) standing over Marhab after Muhammad had struck him down; Mahmud and Amir ibn al-Akwa' were buried in a single grave 1.

For younger visitors

Mahmud ibn Maslama was an Ansari Companion who fought in the campaigns from Uhud to Khaybar; he was killed beneath Na'im's fort by a millstone Marhab dropped on him, and it was his brother Muhammad ibn Maslama who killed Marhab that day, as the Prophet had foretold.

Notes for researchers

  • Al-Isaba entry no. 8001 (al-Maktaba al-Asriyya scan, p. 1374).
  • The fullest account of the manner of his martyrdom is Ibn Sa'd's; Ibn Ishaq has him killed at Na'im's fort, the first of Khaybar's fortresses taken.
