Summary
Ma'qil ibn Sinan al-Ashja'i, Abu Yazid — also given as Abu Muhammad and as Abu Abd al-Rahman — a Companion of Badr; Ibn Ishaq lists him among those who witnessed Badr and the campaigns, and he died in Medina in the year fifty-five as the last survivor of the men of Badr 1.
His entry in al-Isaba
Ibn Ishaq says he witnessed Badr and the campaigns; al-Bukhari says he had companionship and witnessed Badr 1. Al-Mada'ini describes him as short, corpulent and big-bellied, and says he died in Medina in year fifty-five; Ibn Ishaq adds that he was the last of the Companions to die — apparently meaning the men of Badr 1. Ibn Hajar elsewhere corrects the form of his name: in the story of Buru' bint Washiq a report reads "then al-Ashja' ibn Sinan stood up", and the correct reading is "al-Ashja'i ibn Sinan" with the nisba ya' — he is Ma'qil ibn Sinan 2.
For younger visitors
Ma'qil ibn Sinan al-Ashja'i was a Companion of Badr known by his kunya Abu Yazid; he lived so long that he was counted the last surviving Badri, and he died in Medina.
Notes for researchers
- Al-Isaba entry no. 10789 (al-Maktaba al-Asriyya scan, pp. 1802–1803, the kunya section under ya'); the name-form correction is at p. 69.
- "Abu Yazid" is the commonest kunya; Ibn Hajar summarises the transmission wavering between "from Ata' ibn Yazid from his father" and "ibn Abi Yazid".
- "Last of the Companions to die" is qualified in the text itself to the men of Badr.
