    Summary

Mehdi Taremi is an Iranian professional footballer who was born in Bushehr on 18 July 1992.12 A striker for Al Wasl and the Iran national team, he twice finished as the Iranian league's top scorer with Persepolis, won the Portuguese league with Porto, and played for Inter Milan and Olympiacos.1

    Early life

Taremi was born in Bushehr, the youngest of three children; his father, Alishah, was an amateur footballer, and his brother Mohammad also played professionally.1 Between 2010 and 2012 he completed his military service with the IRGC Navy in Bushehr.1

    Club career

Taremi began at Shahin Bushehr and Iranjavan before joining Persepolis in 2014, where he won two league titles and finished as the league's top scorer in 2015–16 and 2016–17.1 After eighteen months at Al-Gharafa in Qatar he moved to Rio Ave in Portugal in 2019 and finished his single season as the league's joint top scorer.1 Four seasons at Porto brought the 2021–22 Primeira Liga title and two Portuguese Cups; his bicycle-kick goal against Chelsea in April 2021 was voted UEFA's goal of the season and nominated for the FIFA Puskás Award, and in 2022–23 he won the Bola de Prata as the league's top scorer.1 He joined Inter Milan in 2024 — the first Iranian to play for the club — and reached the 2025 Champions League final, then moved to Olympiacos in 2025 and to Al Wasl in August 2026.1

    International career

Taremi made his Iran debut against Uzbekistan on 11 June 2015.1 He represented Iran at the 2018, 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups and at three AFC Asian Cups.1

    Positions and criticism

This section presents the positions found in the sources; it is not a verdict by the museum. The English article makes no statement of Taremi's religion: neither "Muslim" nor "Shia" occurs anywhere in its text.1 The Arabic article's infobox gives his religion, without a citation, as "Muslim Shia", a value drawn from Wikidata.2 The one Arabic web page devoted to the question states expressly that his religion is not known, adding only that he is believed to follow Islam according to the Shia school.2 One infobox value and an explicitly hedged belief do not meet the museum's two-source rule, so his faith is recorded in the museum's data as unknown, with the infobox wording preserved in the data record.12
