Mustafa Hosny

Mustafa Hosny is an Egyptian Islamic preacher born in 1978; Wikidata places his birth in Cairo on 28 August of that year. ^{1 2} He holds a bachelor's degree in commerce from Ain Shams University (2000) and the certificate of the preachers' institute of the Ministry of Awqaf, and the Arabic article says he received connected chains of transmission in books of hadith, fiqh and its principles, and creed. ^{1 2} According to the same article he has prepared and presented more than fifty television and radio programmes. ¹

The Arabic article says he is married with children and lives in New Cairo, and that he began working in sales in 1997 while still a student. ¹ He then prepared and presented programmes on the Iqraa channel, later on Egypt's al-Nahar and ON channels; he taught character building at an international school, sat on the board of the association 'Life without Smoking', and founded the 'Ummar al-Ard foundation for building the human being, whose board of trustees he chairs. ¹ The article names him a member of the Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought, says the report of the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre in Jordan ranked him, 'for the eighth year', twenty-seventh among the most influential Muslim figures in the world, and lists coaching certificates and master's studies in psychology. ¹

The article lists his television programmes from 'Nida'at al-Rahman' in 2003 to 'al-Hisn' in Ramadan 2026, among them 'Khada'uka fa-qalu' in four parts, 'Ahl al-Janna' in Ramadan 2013, 'Ish al-Lahza' in Ramadan 2014, 'Kunuz' in five seasons and 'Nur' on the life of the Prophet ﷺ; among his radio programmes it names 'Hadaya al-Rahman' on Nogoum FM in Ramadan 2014. ¹ The Assabile archive keeps three of his video series: 'Ish al-Lahza' ('Live the Moment'), 'Hadaya al-Rahman' ('Gifts of the Merciful') and 'Ahl al-Janna'. ³

In both series he speaks alone to camera in easy Egyptian colloquial, opening each episode with the basmala, praise of God and blessings on the Prophet, and addressing viewers as 'folks' (ya gama'a) and 'your honours'. ^{4 5} In the first episode of 'Ish al-Lahza' he says the moments will be discussed 'all through the month of Ramadan', and he closes 'Hadaya al-Rahman' by saying he has spoken of the gifts 'all through Ramadan'. ^{6 7} He mixes Qur'anic verses, hadiths and sayings of the early generations with what he attributes to 'psychologists', sometimes names a hadith's collection, and in one episode of 'Hadaya al-Rahman' points out that hadith scholars differ over the soundness of a hadith he cites, which he takes on the principle of using such reports for the merits of deeds. ^{8 9 10} In 'Ish al-Lahza' he says every episode ties its moment to one of the names of God. ^{11 12}

In the first episode of 'Ish al-Lahza' he recalls coming home as a young man from the dawn prayer at the mosque with a shaykh who was his neighbour, when the mother of one of his friends called out that a friend of theirs had died, the first death among the young men of their circle; he fell to the ground, the shaykh lifted him and told him to say 'there is no god but God', and he then went round at five in the morning waking his sleeping friends so that they could reach the washing and the burial. ^{13 14 15 16} When another of his dearest friends died, around 2010, the news reached him by telephone at three in the morning; he grieved deeply, he says, but this time did not fall. ^{17 18}

He tells how, about five years before the episode and at a time of heavy work, he spent months waking anxiously at half past seven every morning, afraid for his children as they crossed the road to the school bus, until he phoned the school to have the bus stop on their side, and was at peace. ^{19 20 21} He says it took him about a year after getting to know his wife to begin buying her flowers, because he saw them as something that wilts in days. ²² He remembers scoring eighteen out of thirty in arithmetic in the second year of preparatory school, the worst mark of his life; he thought of altering it or forging the signature, then went and told his mother. ^{23 24} He mentions that someone stood by him in an illness four or five years before the episode. ²⁵

Wikidata records his religion only as Islam, and the Arabic article names no school of law or creed for him. ^{2 1} In one episode of 'Hadaya al-Rahman' he states a point of belief 'as Ahl al-Sunna wa-l-Jama'a say', an attestation by himself that counts as one source. ²⁶ The museum therefore records his school as unknown until a second independent source names it.
