Overview
Abu'l-Marhal — also Abu'l-Fath — Nasr ibn Mansur ibn al-Hasan al-Muqri, the Hanbali poet and man of letters; born on Tuesday 13 Jumada al-Akhira 501 at al-Rafiqa near Raqqa, of the sons of Arab amirs, he grew up in Syria among the literati composing surpassing verse while still a youth; smallpox at fourteen weakened his eyes and he went to Baghdad for treatment, but the physicians despaired and he went blind — whereupon he memorised the Qur'an, heard hadith, studied fiqh and read Arabic and letters under Ibn al-Jawaliqi. He loved scholars and saints — Shaykh 'Abd al-Qadir among them — praised the caliphs and viziers, left a diwan, and was eloquent and firm in the Sunna. 2
Death
He died on Tuesday 30 Rabi' al-Akhir 588 and was buried in Imam Ahmad's cemetery. 2
