Summary
Riazuddin was a Pakistani theoretical physicist, born in Ludhiana on 10 November 1930 and died in Islamabad on 9 September 2013. Specialising in high-energy and nuclear physics, he is considered one of the early pioneers of Pakistan's nuclear weapons and atomic deterrence programmes. He directed the Theoretical Physics Group of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) from 1974 to 1984. He was the twin brother of the theoretical physicist Fayyazuddin. 1
Education and research
He studied at the University of the Punjab and, with Abdus Salam's help, went to the University of Cambridge on a scholarship, where he was awarded his PhD in theoretical physics in 1959; the English article's infobox names Abdus Salam as his doctoral advisor, and its text calls him a pupil of Salam. His name is carried by the Kawarabayashi–Suzuki–Riazuddin–Fayyazuddin (KSRF) relation in particle physics, and he worked on neutrino physics. 1
Career
He began his scientific research in 1958 and carried out research at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), CERN and the Daresbury Laboratory, and taught at institutions including Quaid-e-Azam University, the University of the Punjab, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals and several American universities. At the PAEC his Theoretical Physics Group formed part of the theoretical work behind Pakistan's weapons programme from the 1970s. 1 2
