    Life before the throne

In 1961 he became mayor of Mecca, his first public office, and in 1962 he became commander of the Saudi Arabian National Guard, a post he held for decades, transferring its duties to his son in 2010. On 13 June 1982, the day his brother Fahd became king, Abdullah became Crown Prince. After King Fahd suffered a serious stroke in 1995, Abdullah was the kingdom's de facto ruler for the following decade. 1

    Reign

He became king on 1 August 2005 on Fahd's death and reigned for almost ten years, keeping his country's close alliance with the United States and pursuing measured reforms at home. 1

    Death

King Abdullah died at Riyadh on 23 January 2015 and was succeeded by his brother, Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz. 1 2

    Note on the record

No text read names a religious school for King Abdullah, and no article's infobox carries a religion field. The Sunni reading rests on one structured family of evidence: Wikidata's religion value is Sunni Islam, and all three articles file him under "Saudi Sunni Muslims" categories — and filings do not attest. His school is therefore recorded as unknown, with the Sunni reading preserved here. 1 3 2
