Summary
Riyad Mahrez is an Algerian professional footballer who plays as a right winger and captained Algeria, widely regarded as one of the best African players of all time. 1 The English article describes him as a practising Muslim; it names no school for him, so his data record leaves his faith as unknown. 1
Early life
He was born on 21 February 1991 in Clichy, a commune in the northwestern suburbs of Paris, to an Algerian father from Beni Snous, Tlemcen Province, and a mother of Algerian and Moroccan descent, and he grew up in Sarcelles, regularly spending holidays in Algeria. 1 His father had played football in Algeria and died of a heart attack when Mahrez was fifteen; Mahrez has said that after his father's death he wanted success more. 1
Quimper, Le Havre and Leicester City
He joined AAS Sarcelles as a youth player in 2004, turned professional with Quimper in 2009, and moved to Le Havre in 2010, playing first for the reserve team and then 60 times for the first team in Ligue 2. 1 In January 2014 he signed for Leicester City for around £450,000, helping them win the Championship and promotion in his first season. 1 In 2015–16 he was the Algerian Footballer of the Year, the PFA Players' Player of the Year — the first African to win that award — and a member of the PFA Team of the Year, as Leicester won the Premier League and he became the first Algerian to win a Premier League medal. 1 He was named CAF African Footballer of the Year in 2016. 1
Manchester City and Al-Ahli
On 10 July 2018 Manchester City signed him for £60 million, then a record fee for an African footballer and for City. 1 He won the Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup in his first season, completing an English domestic treble, and went on to win three further league titles, another FA Cup, two more EFL Cups and the UEFA Champions League in 2022–23 as part of a continental treble. 1 In July 2023 he joined Saudi side Al-Ahli. 1
Algeria
He made his international debut for Algeria in 2014 and represented the country at the 2014 World Cup and at successive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, captaining Algeria to victory in the 2019 tournament, the country's second title. 1
