Encyclopaedia of Islam account
The Encyclopaedia of Islam (2nd ed.) describes Shams al-Din Ahmad al-Aflaki of the Mawlawiyya as a disciple of Djalal al-'Arif, the grandson of Djalal al-Din Rumi. At Djalal al-'Arif's request he wrote the Manaqib al-'Arifin, lives of Djalal al-Din Rumi, his father, his successors and his associates, completed in 754/1353–4. The work has been printed and translated into French by Cl. Huart (Les saints des derviches tourneurs, Paris 1918–22), and extracts appear in English. A revised version by 'Abd al-Wahhab al-Hamadani (947/1540–1), with additional dates, and a Turkish translation of it also exist. 1
