In al-Isaba and al-A'lam
Ibn Hajar records in al-Isaba that Sufyan ibn Awf al-Ghamidi was the commander of the summer expeditions, that Mu'awiya appointed him over them and honoured him, and transmits the report of his raid on Hit and al-Anbar alluded to by Ali in a sermon; Ibn Asakir gives his lineage through al-Mughaffal, Awf, Umayr, Kalb, Dhuhl, Sayyar and Waliba back to Ghamid, styling him sahib al-sawa'if 1. Khalifa dated his death to 53 AH and Abu Ubayd to 54 1. Al-Zirikli reports that Mu'awiya sent him with an army into Byzantine lands, where he penetrated to the gates of Constantinople and was killed there 2.

Research notes
- The year of death is 53 AH in Khalifa and 54 in Abu Ubayd; al-Zirikli has him killed near Constantinople — the reports are given as transmitted.
- The Isaba notice is read from the Dar al-Faysaliyya facsimile (pp. 588-589); the record's filed source is the 1328 Sa'ada edition — either citation is to Ibn Hajar's text, and the Sa'ada page may be added on checking.
