Summary
Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (born 1949), universally known by his initials SBY, is an Indonesian politician and retired general who served as the sixth president of Indonesia from 2004 to 2014. A career army officer who rose through the territorial command, he entered government as a minister under Presidents Abdurrahman Wahid and Megawati Sukarnoputri, founded the Democratic Party, and in 2004 won Indonesia's first direct presidential election, defeating the incumbent Megawati; he was re-elected outright in the first round in 2009. 1 2
Early life and military career
He was born on 9 September 1949 at Tremas, in the Pacitan regency of East Java, into a lower-middle-class family; his father was a soldier. He graduated from the Indonesian Military Academy in 1973 and built a career that combined combat and territorial postings — including service connected with East Timor — with staff and teaching appointments and further study in the United States. By the late 1990s he was chief of territorial staff of the armed forces and a public spokesman for a reform-minded military. 1 3
Minister and party founder
After Suharto's fall he held a succession of portfolios: minister of mining and energy, then coordinating minister for political and security affairs under Wahid, a post he again held under Megawati from 2001 to 2004, resigning after a public rift. Supporters founded the Democratic Party in 2001 as his political vehicle. Standing in 2004 with Jusuf Kalla as his running mate, he defeated Megawati in the run-off and was sworn in on 20 October 2004. 1
President
His two terms (2004–2014) were defined by political stability, steady economic growth, the 2005 Aceh peace settlement reached in his first year, counter-terrorism after the Bali bombings, and an activist foreign policy. He won a second term in 2009 with Boediono as vice president, taking an outright majority in the first round. He left office on 20 October 2014, succeeded by Joko Widodo, and remained chairman of the Democratic Party until 2020. 1 4
Faith
The sources registered here record no school for him: the articles carry no religion field, and Wikidata gives Islam in general. The museum therefore records his faith as unknown rather than infer a school from his office or his public identity. 2
