Summary
Ubada ibn al-Khashkhash (may God be pleased with him) ibn Imara ibn Malik ibn Amr, al-Balawi, an ally (halif) of the Ansar, a man with idrak who was listed among the men of Badr and among those martyred at Uhud 1.
His entry in al-Isaba
Ibn al-Kalbi gave his nasab, as Ibn Hajar transmits: a Balawi allied to the Ansar 1. Ibn Manda — citing Sayf — says he witnessed some of the conquests in Abu Bakr's time, while Ibn Ishaq names him among those martyred at Uhud, buried together with al-Mujadhdhar ibn Ziyad (may God be pleased with him) and al-Nu'man ibn Malik in a single grave 1. Ibn Ishaq and Abu Ma'shar list him among the Badriyyun; al-Waqidi writes his name "Ubda" and Abu Umar "Ubbad" in another form, and Ibn Manda calls him "al-Anbari", which Ibn Hajar says is an error, since the authorities agree he was a Balawi allied to Banu Sulaym 1. Ibn Manda also transmits through Yunus ibn Bukayr from Ibn Ishaq that he was killed on the day of Uhud — from Banu Awf ibn al-Khazraj and then Banu Salim — Ubada ibn al-Khashkhash 2.
For younger visitors
Ubada ibn al-Khashkhash was a man of the Balaw tribe allied with the Ansar; the maghazi authors name him among those killed at Uhud, buried with two companions in one grave.
Notes for researchers
- Al-Isaba entry no. 4567 (al-Maktaba al-Asriyya scan, pp. 769–770).
- The entry carries two mutually conflicting reports which Ibn Hajar sets side by side: martyrdom at Uhud (Ibn Ishaq, and Ibn Manda from him) versus presence at the conquests under Abu Bakr (Sayf); they are kept here in their tension.
- The misspellings of his name in al-Waqidi ("Ubda"), Abu Umar ("Ubbad") and his nisba in Ibn Manda ("al-Anbari") are stated in the text itself.
