Summary
Ubaydallah ibn Abdallah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him) al-Adawi of Medina, Abu Bakr, full brother of Salim ibn Abdallah ibn Umar; al-Taqrib grades him "trustworthy, of the third layer," and he died in 106 AH 1.
His entry in Taqrib al-Tahdhib
Ibn Hajar writes in al-Taqrib: Ubaydallah ibn Abdallah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab al-Adawi of Medina, Abu Bakr, full brother of Salim — trustworthy, of the third layer, died in year one hundred and six; the major collections narrate from him 1. The Kashif al-Dhahabi material embedded in this edition adds: he transmitted from his father and from Sumayta al-Laythiyya, and al-Zuhri, Ubaydallah ibn Umar and a group transmitted from him; he died before his brother Salim 1.
His place in the house of Umar
He was one of the transmitting sons of Abdallah ibn Umar; his brother Salim is among the best-known jurists of Medina, and the statement that he died before Salim, in 106 AH, is explicit in this edition 1.
For younger visitors
Ubaydallah ibn Abdallah ibn Umar was a grandson of Umar ibn al-Khattab and a brother of the Medinan scholar Salim; he narrated from his father, and al-Zuhri and the scholars of his generation narrated from him.
Notes for researchers
- Taqrib al-Tahdhib, entry 4310 (Majmu'at al-kutub scan, p. 406).
- The scan reads "died year sixty and a hundred" — an obvious misprint for "six and a hundred"; his death before Salim is well-attested in the biographical books.
- Sumayta al-Laythiyya is one of the minor female transmitters he narrates from.
