Summary

Yazid ibn Qays ibn al-Khatim ibn Adi ibn Amr ibn Sawad ibn Zufar al-Ansari al-Zafari, a man of the earliest community famed as a poet — he was even given his kunya after his verse; al-Isaba records his wounds at Uhud and his death at the Battle of the Bridge 1.

His entry in al-Isaba

Ibn Hajar writes in al-Isaba: Yazid ibn Qays ibn al-Khatim ibn Adi ibn Amr ibn Sawad ibn Zufar al-Ansari al-Zafari 1. He was the celebrated poet, and it was by this that he was given his kunya; al-Adawi said: he witnessed Uhud and was wounded that day with twelve wounds 1. Abu Umar, following Ibn al-Kalbi, said: he witnessed the campaigns and was martyred on the day of Abu Ubayd's bridge 2.

The poet's standing

His entry notes that he was given his kunya on account of his verse; the Isaba presents him as a veteran of the campaigns who was badly wounded at Uhud, and places his death at the day of the Bridge in the time of Abu Bakr — the report that Abu Umar transmitted from Ibn al-Kalbi 2.

For younger visitors

Yazid ibn Qays was a man of the Ansar known for his poetry; he fought at Uhud and was wounded many times, then was among those killed at the day of the Bridge in the days of Abu Bakr.

Notes for researchers

  • Al-Isaba fi tamyiz al-sahaba, entry 9402 (scan 20200217, pp. 1596–1597).
  • After "the Prophet ﷺ named him" the scan shows corrupted words; they are not relied on here.
  • The attribution of his death to "the day of Abu Ubayd's bridge" is transmitted from Abu Umar citing Ibn al-Kalbi, as in the text.
