Summary

Zayd ibn Abdallah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him), a Medinan Successor of the family of Umar ibn al-Khattab, born during his grandfather's caliphate; al-Taqrib grades him "trustworthy, of the second layer" 1.

His entry in Taqrib al-Tahdhib

Ibn Hajar writes in al-Taqrib: Zayd ibn Abdallah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab — trustworthy, of the second layer, born during his grandfather's caliphate; al-Bukhari, Muslim, al-Nasa'i and Ibn Maja narrate from him 1. The Kashif al-Dhahabi material embedded in this edition adds: he transmitted from his father, and Nafi' the client of Ibn Umar and his grandson Umar ibn Muhammad transmitted from him 1.

His place in the house of Umar

He grew up in a house of learning in Quraysh: his father Abdallah ibn Umar was among the most prolific hadith transmitters of the Companions, and his grandfather was Umar ibn al-Khattab; being born during his grandfather's caliphate makes him one of the older sons of Abdallah ibn Umar 1.

For younger visitors

Zayd ibn Abdallah ibn Umar was the grandson of the caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab; he was born while his grandfather ruled, grew up in a house of learning, and narrated from his father while the people of Medina narrated from him.

Notes for researchers

  • Taqrib al-Tahdhib, entry 2143 (Majmu'at al-kutub scan, p. 212).
  • The entry is brief as is al-Taqrib's custom; the detail is in Tahdhib al-Tahdhib and Ibn Sa'd's Tabaqat.
  • "Of the second layer" means the second rank of transmitters in Ibn Hajar's scheme.
