Does the follower recite al-Fatiha behind the imam?

Ideas Living

هل يقرأ المأموم الفاتحة خلف الإمام؟

Al-Qurtubi sets out three Sunni positions on the follower's recitation: Malik's well-known view that he recites when the imam recites silently and not when he recites aloud; al-Shafi'i (as al-Buwayti reports) and Ahmad, that he recites al-Fatiha in every rak'a whether the imam is loud or silent; and Ibn Wahb, Ashhab, Ibn Abd al-Hakam, Ibn Habib and the Kufans, that he recites nothing. Al-Qurtubi prefers the view of al-Shafi'i and Ahmad.

Summary

In the sixth to ninth questions of his chapter on the rulings of al-Fatiha, al-Qurtubi treats the follower's recitation. 1 2 He begins with a point of agreement: if one joins the imam while he is bowing, the imam carries the recitation for him, since all agree that he says the takbir and bows without reciting; if he joins him standing, he recites. 1

Notes for researchers

  • 'The Kufans' in al-Qurtubi's wording are Abu Hanifa, his companions and those of Kufa who agreed with them; the pages read do not name them here, so only Abu Hanifa is linked.
  • The verse is not quoted; it is referred to by number as al-Qurtubi names it.
