the five pillars

Muslim worship stands on five pillars: the testimony that there is no god but God and Muhammad is His messenger; prayer five times a day; zakat, the share the poor hold in one's wealth; fasting through Ramadan; and the Hajj to God's House for whoever is able. These are not mere habits — they are a daily frame linking a person to God and to neighbors. The testimony is announced at birth and echoed in every prayer; prayer interrupts the day five times and teaches order; zakat moves money from a tight hand to a needy one; fasting schools patience and mercy; and the Hajj gathers Muslims from every land in one dress and one standing. In this way faith becomes a life, not just words. That is why they are called pillars: as no house stands without columns, a Muslim's faith does not stand without them — the frame of a day, a year and a whole life.
