Summary
Darulifta-Deoband.com is a fatwa website in Urdu and English run by the Online Fatwa Department of Darul Uloom Deoband in India. 1
Beginnings
Darul Uloom started its institutional website in 2002, as the internet reached India's towns and cities, and its fatwa department began answering questions from around the world by e-mail. As the queries grew it set up an Online Fatwa Department in 2005 and launched the bilingual website in 2007. 1
Its size
A 2018 doctoral thesis says the site held some thirty thousand selected fatwas in Urdu and English in December 2016 and calls it the world's largest bilingual fatwa website; in January 2022 it held 9,181 fatwas in English and 32,812 in Urdu, answered by nine muftis under Habibur Rahman Khairabadi. 1 Darul Uloom receives about 15,000 requests for fatwas a year, six to seven thousand of them online. 1
Controversy and block
In January 2022, acting on a complaint, India's National Commission for Protection of Child Rights said some answers on the portal were not in line with the country's laws and harmed children's rights, and recommended that the Uttar Pradesh government block access until the content was removed. 1 The Students Islamic Organisation of India called it "another attempt to undermine the madrassa", and Darul Uloom's vice-chancellor, Abul Qasim Nomani, said that those who seek fatwas in the light of the Sharia are answered in its light, with no obligation on anyone. 1 The site was blocked in India on 7 February 2022. 1 The museum gives these positions attributed and does not judge between them.
Today
It has articles in five Wikipedia editions, among them Urdu, Hindi and Bengali. 2
