Summary
A question on keeping a layer of gel on the nails during ablution to stop compulsive skin-picking, in which IslamQA permitted wiping over it while the need lasts. 1
The question
The questioner said she has for years compulsively picked the skin around her nails, to the point of bleeding, infections and wounds. 1 A protective layer of gel, she said, greatly curbs the habit, she returns to it when the gel is removed, and she does not wear it for adornment. 1 She asked whether this is a recognised therapeutic need that permits keeping the gel on during ablution and prayer. 1
The answer
IslamQA answered that the rule is to remove whatever keeps water from reaching the nails. 1 It held that if the gel is needed to prevent this harm and no suitable alternative is available, it may be kept and wiped over, on the analogy of the ruling for a splint, for as long as the need lasts. 1 It advised her to seek treatment for the compulsion. 1
