Summary
Taqrib al-Tahdhib is Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's (d. 852 AH) epitome of his own Tahdhib al-Tahdhib — itself a recension of al-Mizzi's al-Kamal fi Asma' al-Rijal. Ibn al-Imad al-Hanbali lists it in Shadharat al-Dhahab among Ibn Hajar's works: "and the recension of Tahdhib al-Kamal by the hafiz al-Mizzi in six volumes, and its epitome Taqrib al-Tahdhib in one large volume" 1.
Among Ibn Hajar's works
In Ibn Hajar's tarjama Ibn al-Imad enumerates a long list of his compositions, opening with Ta'liq al-Ta'liq on al-Bukhari's 'ilal and Fath al-Bari, his commentary on the Sahih in more than twenty volumes, and including alongside Taqrib al-Tahdhib the Isaba on distinguishing the Companions, Lisan al-Mizan, Tabsir al-Muntabih, al-Durar al-Kamina and Anba' al-Ghumr — a picture of the scale of his rijal project, in which the Taqrib stands at the most condensed tier 1.
For young visitors
Taqrib al-Tahdhib is Ibn Hajar's abridgement of his own larger book on the names and standings of hadith transmitters, and it became one of the most-used books in that field.
Research notes
- Text from Ibn al-Imad's Shadharat al-Dhahab (harvest copy AAlexandrina-223853), p. 280, Ibn Hajar's tarjama in the events of the eighth century; the Taqrib's four-tier grading terminology awaits the book's own introduction.
