Summary
Ahmad Mustofa Bisri, known across Indonesia as Gus Mus, is an Indonesian scholar, poet and painter, born in Rembang, Central Java, on 10 August 1944. He heads the Raudlatut Thalibin pesantren (Islamic boarding school) in Rembang and is a senior figure of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the world's largest Muslim organisation: he served as its Rais Syuriah from 1994 and as Rais Aam, its supreme leader, from March 2014 to August 2015. 1 2
Early life and education
Bisri was born into a family of religious scholars: his father, K.H. Bisri Mustofa, founded the Raudlatut Thalibin pesantren, and his mother was Nyai Marafah Cholil. 2 After primary school in Rembang he studied at two of Java's best-known pesantren — Lirboyo in Kediri, under K.H. Marzuqi Dahlan and K.H. Mahrus Aly, and Al-Munawwir at Krapyak, Yogyakarta, under K.H. Ali Maksum and K.H. Abdul Qadir — and then at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, where the Indonesian article places his studies in the years 1964–1970. 1 2
Pesantren and Nahdlatul Ulama
On returning to Rembang he took up the leadership of his father's pesantren at Leteh, Rembang, which he still heads. 1 His NU career began on its Rembang board in 1970; he became an adviser (Mustasyar) of NU in Central Java in 1977 and was elected Rais Syuriah of the national board at the 1994 congress at Cipanas. 1 When K.H. Sahal Mahfudz died in January 2014, Bisri, his deputy, succeeded him as Rais Aam, serving from 3 March 2014 until 6 August 2015. 2 He married Siti Fatma in 1971; she died in 2016, and they had seven children. 2
Poetry and honours
Alongside his scholarship, Bisri is one of Indonesia's most-loved poets: his collections include Ohoi, Tadarus, Negeri Daging and Gandrung, and his prose works include the Ensiklopedi Ijmak, written with K.H. Sahal Mahfudz, Fikih Keseharian Gus Mus (Everyday Jurisprudence) and Canda Nabi & Tawa Sufi; he also paints. 1 2 He received the Mastera Asian Literature Award in 2005, an honorary doctorate in Islamic culture from UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Yogyakarta, in 2009, and the Bintang Budaya Parama Dharma cultural medal from President Joko Widodo in 2015; in 2017 he became the first religious leader to receive the Yap Thiam Hien human-rights award. 2 His official website is gusmus.net, and his GusMus Channel on YouTube counted about 161 thousand subscribers in June 2024, as reported by the Islamic Communication Journal — a dated platform figure, not a museum-verified fact. 1
