Overview

Maslama ibn Mukhallad laid out Dar al-Raml, together with Abu Rafi', the Prophet ﷺ's freedman, and Uqba ibn Amir al-Juhani. Later Mu'awiya asked Maslama for his house and he gave it, and was given in exchange a plot on open ground for his house with a bath at Suq Wardan. 1

Accounts of the name

It is said that Uqba ibn Amir bought the neighbouring house of al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad, pulled down both and built them as one house for Ramla daughter of Mu'awiya; Mu'awiya wrote that he had no need of it and that it should be given to the Muslims. So it was named after Ramla, or after the sand (raml) carried there for the mint. 2

The governors' house

In another report, Mu'awiya on becoming caliph asked Uqba to hand it over for Yazid because it was near the mosque; its ground floor was built for Yazid, who was also granted a village in the Fayyum. People made much of this, so Mu'awiya returned the village to the land-tax rolls and made Dar al-Raml a house for the Muslims where their governors lodged. Only the ground floor stood until al-Qasim ibn Ubayd Allah ibn al-Habhab built the upper storey. 3
