Overview

The Kalu Sarai mosque stands on the Mehrauli road in Delhi, in the neighbourhood of the Begumpur mosque. 1 It has no inscription, but it has been identified as a Firuzian mosque built by Khan-i Jahan, Firuz Shah Tughluq's vizier, and the author dates it to about AH 789/1387 by analogy with his contemporary mosques. 1

Fabric and state

It is built of rubble and mortar on a high plinth and roofed with cupolas, in the same Firuzian manner. 1 2 Its north and south halls have been destroyed and only part of it remains; when the author surveyed it she found no inscription and no entrance gateway, and people living in it rather than praying there. 1 3 At the same point she reproduces Zafar Hasan's and Syed Ahmad Khan's description of an octagonal building on a high plinth, which Syed Ahmad Khan calls Badi Manzil and, on the authority of the Akhbar al-Akhyar, a bastion of Jahanpanah where Shaykh Hasan Tahir lived under Sikandar Lodi and was buried nearby; how that building relates to the mosque is not clear in her text. 1 4 3
