The poor and the workerEthics and character
Summary
The Sheikh asks what has gone wrong between worker and employer, employee and manager, subordinate and superior, making institutions unproductive, and holds that institutions are not productive through management or planning alone; their output grows when a system of love binds management and workers. 1 2
Injustice at work
He holds that an employer's arrogance toward an employee, his abuse and the denial of his due are a kind of short measure and of injustice, and that a cheated employee will pray against the owner. 3 Among these he counts not paying the full wage, overloading him beyond his capacity, or exploiting his shyness to give him extra work without pay. 4 He cites the hadith of Abu Dharr about two sheep butting each other, between which God will judge on the Day of Resurrection, and holds that if a dumb animal receives retribution, how much more a human being. 4 5 He asks: will God bless an institution whose owner wronged a man who then prayed against him at night, or took a right not his? He mentions that people will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection even for a needle. 6 7
A system of love
He calls for the return of a system of love between employer and worker, superior and subordinate, ruler and ruled, as in the society of Medina in the Prophet ﷺ's time, and mentions the hadith qudsi that God is the third of two partners so long as neither betrays the other, applying it to spouses: if the husband spreads his wife's secrets, or the wife takes from her husband's money what is not her right, blessing is withdrawn from the home. 8 9
