Times and places when prayer is answered (mawatin al-ijaba)

مَوَاطِن الإِجَابَة

The places and times of answered prayer are those where it is likely that a supplication will be granted. Seeking them out is recommended in the Qur'an and the Sunna. They are of three kinds: times, such as the last third of the night, Friday and its hour, the nights of Ramadan and the Night of Power; places, such as al-Multazam and Arafat; and states, such as prostration, after the prescribed prayer, while fasting, on a journey, in battle, for the wronged and the distressed, in gatherings of remembrance, and for a brother in his absence. The entry also notes that the answer may be deferred for the good of the supplicant.

Summary

The places and times of answered prayer are those where a supplication is more likely to be granted. Seeking them out is recommended. 1

Recommendation

Seeking them out is recommended in the Qur'an and the Sunna. The likelihood of an answer is not a certainty for every prayer. 1 2

Kinds

They are times, places where the supplicant is already engaged in worship, and states in which an answer is hoped for, such as the lines meeting in battle, the falling of rain and the prescribed prayers. 3

Times

The last third of the night, on the report of the descent of God to the lowest heaven. The hour of Friday is a moment when no Muslim who asks God for something is refused, the jurists giving many views of which hour it is. The Night of Power has a supplication that is granted. 4 5 6 7

Places

Al-Multazam, where a supplicant who asks is granted, according to Ibn 'Abbas; and Arafat, where the Prophet ﷺ urged supplication. 7 8

States

Supplication between the call and the iqama is not refused. Prostration is the place of the answer, as the Prophet bade the supplicant to be earnest in it. Supplication after the prescribed prayer is a time of answer, by the majority. 8 9 10

Other states

The fasting person at iftar, the traveller, the wronged, the parent against the child, the warrior, the one in gatherings of remembrance, and one who prays for an absent brother are all states of answer. 10 11 12 13

The greatest name

A prayer that uses God's greatest name is answered, supported by the reports of Buraydah and Anas. The answer may be delayed for the good of the supplicant. 14 15
