Letters between Ali and Muawiya after the Camel

36 AH

After the Camel, Ali wrote to Muawiya urging him to enter the community's allegiance, noting that the consultation belonged to the Emigrants and Helpers and that Talha and Zubayr had broken their pledge 1. Muawiya replied that he would not pledge until Uthman's killers were handed over, and disputed that the Medinan pledge bound the people of Syria 2. Al-Aqqad sees each closed door opening onto another, so that the letters ended without an agreement 2.

Al-Aqqad: two parties who did not share a point of reference

Al-Aqqad holds that Ali relied on consultation and the pledge, Muawiya on retribution for the killers, so the two had no shared authority to appeal to {cite:abqariyyat-ali-aqqad p.78}. This is the author's reading.

Ali declines to keep Muawiya in office

After the pledge of allegiance, al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba advised keeping Muawiya in Syria for a while and Ibn Abbas warned that dismissal would stir Syria; Ali refused, saying he would not employ Muawiya for two days. Al-Aqqad judges that Ali was right, since Muawiya was building a state for himself and his heirs.
