between 656 and 661 CE

Kufa

A young man complained that a company of travellers came back without his father and with his father's money.

Opinions on the question

First opinion · Sunni tradition (the museum's frame)Main reference

Al-Sallabi presents the story as proof of Ali's skill at uncovering truth by separating the accused, and as a model of how police worked under him {cite:sallabi-ali-vol1 p. 271}.

The book offers no academic test of the story's historicity or of the confession obtained under pressure in the report; to be checked against Ibn al-Qayyim's al-Turuq al-Hukmiyya (needs_source).

Ali burns the village of Zarara where wine was sold

Ali passed a quarter of Kufa called Zarara where meat was sold and wine too, and ordered it set on fire, saying the wicked eat each other; the fire spread from its western side until it reached an orchard. Al-Sallabi takes the report from Abu Ubayd al-Qasim ibn Sallam's Kitab al-Amwal.
