Qarwash al-Uqayli's khutba for al-Hakim at Mosul and Kufa

خطبة قرواش العقيلي للحاكم بالموصل والكوفة

c. August 1010 CE · Muharram 401 AH

Mosul

In Muharram 401 Abu'l-Mani' Qarwash ibn al-Muqallad gathered the people of Mosul, declared obedience to al-Hakim, ruler of Egypt, and established the da'wa for him at Mosul. He then went down to Kufa, al-Mada'in and al-Qasr, where the khutba was read for the Fatimid al-Hakim. The caliphal chancery at Baghdad alleged this, so al-Qadir sent to Amid al-Juyush and Baha al-Dawla, and dispatched to him the judge Abu Bakr al-Baqillani. Baha al-Dawla released a hundred thousand dinars for the army's expenses and wrote to Qarwash with a warning; Qarwash apologised, pledged to remove the matter, and restored the khutba to al-Qadir billah 1.

Summary

In Muharram of the year 401, the amir Qarwash ibn al-Muqallad al-Uqayli declared his obedience to al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah, the Fatimid ruler of Egypt, and had the Friday sermon delivered in his name at Mosul, Kufa and al-Mada'in, before returning to obedience to al-Qadir Billah. 1

The sermon in Mosul and along the Euphrates

Qarwash gathered the people of Mosul on the fourth Friday of Muharram. He clothed the preacher in a robe of honour and gave him a text of what to preach, which included prayers for the Fatimid imams, up to al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah. He then went down to Kufa, al-Mada'in and al-Qasr, where he had the Fatimid call proclaimed and interfered in their dealings. 2

The caliphate rallies, and Baha al-Dawla

News reached the caliph al-Qadir Billah and alarmed him. He sent to Amid al-Juyush and wrote to Baha al-Dawla, and dispatched the judge Abu Bakr al-Baqillani as an envoy to him. Baha al-Dawla released a hundred thousand dinars for the army's expenses and threatened Qarwash that he would march against him if he did not return. Qarwash apologised, removed the Fatimid sermon and restored the Abbasid call. 3

Deposition of al-Ta'i' and Accession of al-Qadir

In 381 al-Ta'i' was seized — for jailing one of Baha' al-Dawla's intimates: the Daylamites dragged him from his throne, wrapped him in a cloak and bore him off while the city shook; they wrote on him his self-deposition for al-Qadir, witnessed by the grandees on 19 Sha'ban. He lived honoured in al-Qadir's house — once complaining when brought a half-burnt candle — till he died on Fitr night 393, al-Qadir praying over him and al-Sharif al-Radi elegising him; he was fiercely set against the Alids, and awe fell so low in his days the poets satirised him.
