Summary
The Treaty of Szeged — a ten-year peace concluded in July 848/1444 after Hunyadi's two defeats of the Ottomans in 846/1442 forced them to sue. Murad II ceded Serbia to George Branković and Wallachia to Hungary, and ransomed his son-in-law, the army commander Mahmud Çelebi, for sixty thousand ducats 1.
Drawn up in Ottoman and Hungarian, it was sworn by Ladislas on the Gospel and by Murad on the Qur'an. The book narrates Cardinal Cesarini and Pope Eugene IV preaching its annulment — a treaty made without the pope's leave being void — and the coalition's breach of it led straight to Varna 2.
