Overview
Before the battle
al-Sallabi says that one of the Christian kings urged their kings to break the treaty, persuading them that the Pope would absolve them of their oath. They gathered their armies and besieged the city of Varna on the Black Sea coast. The men of state at Edirne urged Murad to hasten, so he came out of his retreat and led the armies. A Genoese fleet carried forty thousand men of the Ottoman army from Asia to Europe for a ducat per soldier. 2
The battle
Murad reached Varna on the same day the Crusaders arrived, and raised the treaty on the point of a spear. A hard battle was fought, in which victory almost went to the Christians, until King Ladislaus met Sultan Murad and fell from his horse. al-Sallabi says that the Crusaders were seized with panic and turned their backs. 2
The Gregorian date is derived from the Hijri year.
