the day of Dhū ʿAlaq — Abū Barāʾ's truce with Khālid ibn Naḍla

يوم ذي علق — عامر وأسد والهدنة بين أبي براء وخالد بن نضلة

c. 600 CE

Dhu 'Alaq

At Dhū ʿAlaq, where Banū ʿĀmir met Banū Asad, Rabīʿa ibn Mālik — Labīd the poet's father — fell and ʿĀmir broke. Khālid ibn Naḍla al-Asadī, his son Ḥabīb and al-Ḥārith ibn Khālid pressed the pursuit until Abū Barāʾ ʿĀmir ibn Mālik appeared behind them: «if you will, we will carry off our wounded and bury our dead» — the parties stood down; and Mālik ibn Nuwayra sang of hamstringing «the foal of Qābūs» when the host saw death in him 1.

Summary

The Day of Dhi Alaq is when the Banu Amir and the Banu Asad met. Rabi'a ibn Malik al-Kilabi, described in the source as Abu Labid the poet, was killed, and Amir was routed. Khalid ibn Nadla al-Asadi, his son Habib, and al-Harith ibn Khalid ibn al-Mudall pursued them far. Abu Bara Amir ibn Malik came out after them with a group and asked for a truce, so that they could carry off their wounded and bury their dead. They agreed, and both sides halted. When Abu Bara heard of Rabi'a's killing, he attacked their rearguard. A poem by Malik ibn Nuwayra is cited about the day, recalling how Qabus's mare was hamstrung after the enemy had seen death from them and the horses were clamouring. 1
