Overview

Shaykh of shaykhs Abu'l-Qasim 'Abdallah b. Hamuwayh al-Juwayni, ancestor of the Banu Hamuwayh; a man of piety and guidance, praised for sanctity, composure and devotion, versed in the knowledge of tasawwuf, the affairs of the Sufis, their sayings and their paths of old and late — a doer of good whose kitchen was busy feeding the poor and the Sufis. 1

His hearings and death

Born 449 at Juwayn; he heard Abu Sa'id al-Saffar, Abu Muhammad al-Jurjani and 'Abd al-Ghafir al-Farisi and was the last to transmit from them. Ibn al-Zarkuni related: such was his zeal in religion that when he fell ill he went out beyond the town mosque and sat there, saying, "I was not told the mosque is a mosque [in the legal sense] — so it is not for me to spit in it." He died in Ramadan 530. 1

Shaykh of the Shafi'is — driven from Khurasan when the vizier al-Kunduri obtained Alp Arslan's licence to curse the Rafida and the Ash'aris from the minbars; his four years teaching at Mecca gave him the title Imam al-Haramayn, and Nizam al-Mulk's reign brought the exiles home in honour.
