Overview
Abu al-Ma'ali Abd al-Malik ibn Abdallah al-Juwayni, known as Imam al-Haramayn, whom Ibn al-Imad describes as the shaykh of the Shafi'is in his age. 1
The title Imam al-Haramayn
Ibn al-Imad relates in Shadharat al-Dhahab that Amid al-Mulk al-Kunduri, vizier of Alp Arslan, spoke to the sultan about cursing the Rafida from the pulpits of Khurasan, and he gave permission. He ordered them cursed, and added the Ash'aris to them. 1
The imams of Khurasan were distressed by this and left it. Al-Juwayni stayed in Mecca for four years teaching and giving legal opinions, and for this he was called "Imam al-Haramayn" (the imam of the two sanctuaries). 1
Afterwards
When the Nizamiyya state was established, it summoned those of these scholars who had withdrawn, and honoured them. Al-Juwayni had gone to Baghdad and kept company with Amid al-Kunduri for a time, disputing before the great scholars in his assembly until his judgement became respected and his fame spread. 1
