Summary
A Qarmatian leader who took up the cause after his brother Yahya ibn Zakarawayh, "the man of the she-camel," was killed, and carried the banner of the da'wa in the Syrian desert and the lands around it. In the year 291 AH, the agents of the authority defeated him and he was captured at a place called al-Taqarmati. He was taken to al-Raqqa wearing a burnous. Then al-Muktafi had a seat two and a half cubits high set for him on the back of an elephant, and he entered Baghdad with the captives before him, a conical piece of wood having been placed in his mouth and tied at the sides of his mouth like a bridle.
Al-Muktafi ordered a platform ten cubits high built in the old prayer ground on its eastern side. On Monday, seven days before the end of Rabi al-Awwal, thirty-four of the captives were brought before him; their hands and feet were cut off and their necks struck one by one before him. Then he himself was brought forward, given two hundred lashes, had his hands and feet cut off, was cauterised, and was then burned. His head was raised on a pole and his body was crucified at the upper end of the bridge.
The flame of their movement was not extinguished: another brother of his rose up at al-Daliya in the year 293 AH, and the Qarmatians entered Kufa on the day of Eid al-Adha, calling out "O vengeance for al-Husayn!"
