    Overview

The scholar Kamal al-Din Ibn Yunus of Mosul, the Shafi'i, one of the great luminaries; he read fiqh under his father and at Baghdad under the Nizamiyya's tutor al-Sadid al-Salmasi, mastering usul and khilaf, read grammar under Ibn Sa'dun al-Qurtubi, and gave himself wholly to the rational sciences until he reached their utmost — it was said he mastered fourteen disciplines, some say twenty-four sciences with complete mastery — and alone perfected mathematics, having no equal. 1

    His place in learning

He was suspected in religion because the rational sciences dominated him; when Fakhr al-Din al-Razi's books reached Mosul no one understood their terminology but him, and the People of the Covenant read Torah and Gospel under him, confessing they found no one to clarify them like him. Ibn Khallikan saw him at Mosul in Ramadan 626 and visited him repeatedly. 1
