Summary
Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Jarir ibn Rustam al-Tabari, namesake of the exegete Muhammad ibn Jarir ibn Yazid al-Tabari, sharing his kunya and nisba. 1 Al-Dhahabi mentions him in Mizan al-I'tidal in the entry immediately after the exegete's. 1
In Mizan al-I'tidal
Al-Dhahabi describes him as a Rafidi with works, among them "the book of those who narrate from the People of the House", and says that Abd al-Aziz al-Kattani charged him with rafd. 1 The description of him as a Rafidi is al-Kattani's judgement as al-Dhahabi reports it; the museum has no other source on him yet.
Confusion with the exegete
In the exegete's entry al-Dhahabi reports that the hafiz Ahmad ibn Ali al-Sulaymani said of "Ibn Jarir" that he forged reports for the Rafida, and al-Dhahabi firmly rejects this as said of the exegete. 1 He then suggests that al-Sulaymani perhaps meant this man, Ibn Rustam, and not the imam and exegete. 1 In al-Bijawi's edition this suggestion stands in square brackets, meaning the editor added it from one of the manuscripts. 1
