Summary
"The Book of al-Jabr wa al-Muqabala" by Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi. The edition read here is the Cairo edition of 1939, prepared by ʿAli Mustafa Mashraffa and Muhammad Mursi Ahmad of the Faculty of Science at the Egyptian University 1.
On the manuscript and the edition
The two editors state that the base of their edition is a manuscript copied about five hundred years after the author's death. Its margins contain glosses that count as the commentaries added when the book was taught, and the editors did not treat them as part of the main text. They also state that they corrected what appeared to them to be clear copying errors without indication 2 3.
Its standing
The editors present the book as one of the works that should be published from the Egyptian and Islamic scientific heritage, because of its influence in shaping human thought 2.
Note on the source
The text of the book has not yet been read, and the edition has not yet been checked against the manuscript. The date of al-Khwarizmi's death is not given in the book or in these pages, so it is not recorded here.
