Summary

Al-Jami' al-Saghir min Hadith al-Bashir al-Nadhir is Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti's collection of short hadiths. In his preface, as al-Nabhani quotes it, he says he put thousands of the Prophet ﷺ's sayings into it, kept to the brief ones, arranged them alphabetically by the opening of each hadith and what follows, and gave it this name because it was excerpted from his large Jam' al-Jawami'. 2 Al-Nabhani reports that al-Suyuti wrote at its end that he finished it in 907 AH, and that it was widely received and much commented upon. 3

Sigla and supplement

Al-Suyuti marks the compilers of each hadith with letters, among them kh for al-Bukhari, m for Muslim, q for both, 4 for the four Sunan, hm for Ahmad, k for al-Hakim, tb for al-Tabarani's large Mu'jam, hb for al-Bayhaqi's Shu'ab al-Iman and kht for al-Khatib. 4 He then wrote a supplement, Ziyadat al-Jami', with the same sigla and order, and al-Nabhani merged the two in al-Fath al-Kabir. 5 'Abd al-Ra'uf al-Munawi commented on it in Fayd al-Qadir. 6

Assessments

Al-Albani also finds its alphabetical order not strictly kept, giving examples from the chapter on "kana". 12

In the Khayriyya printing

Al-Jami' al-Saghir was printed by al-Matba'a al-Khayriyya in Cairo, owned by al-Sayyid 'Umar Husayn al-Khashshab, with al-Munawi's Kunuz al-Haqa'iq in the margin; the printer notes that the sigla for sound, good and weak (s, h, d) are placed in the main text between brackets after the transmitters. 13 In this printing the hadith "Actions are only by intentions" stands at the end of al-Suyuti's preface, after the list of sigla, cited with the siglum "q 4" to 'Umar b. al-Khattab and then to Abu Sa'id and others. 14 This fits Zuhayr al-Shawish's observation that some manuscripts of the Jami' place it at the end of the preface and others omit it. 15

Al-Nabhani on its count and grades

In the preface to al-Fath al-Kabir, al-Nabhani says the commentators give al-Jami' al-Saghir 10,934 hadiths, but that he counted them himself and found ten thousand and about ten more, thinking they had all followed al-Munawi. 17

This view stands against those of al-Munawi and al-Albani given above.

Opinions on the question

he says he took great care over the citations and "kept it free of what a forger or liar alone transmitted". 4

Sunni tradition (the museum's frame) · Sunni: al-MunawiMain reference

holds that this claim is "mostly true, or only claimed", that al-Suyuti included many weak hadiths, and that the sigla for sound, good and weak in some copies cannot be trusted because of copyists' corruptions. 7 8

Sunni tradition (the museum's frame) · Sunni: al-AlbaniMain reference

holds that it contains thousands of weak and objectionable hadiths and hundreds of fabricated ones and that its sigla cannot be relied on, explaining that al-Suyuti gathered but could not sift; he therefore divided al-Fath al-Kabir into sound and weak. 9 10 11

Sunni tradition (the museum's frame) · Sunni: Yusuf al-NabhaniMain reference

holds that, since al-Suyuti selected al-Jami' al-Saghir from Jam' al-Jawami', he included no very weak hadiths, so most of it is sound or good and the weak are few — and that weak hadith is in any case acted upon in the merits of deeds, as he takes to be settled. 16

Sahih al-Jami' al-Saghir wa-Ziyadatuh (al-Fath al-Kabir)

The first part of Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani's grading of al-Fath al-Kabir — al-Nabhani's merger of al-Suyuti's al-Jami' al-Saghir with its supplement al-Ziyada: it holds what al-Albani judges established and usable as proof (sound and good), in alphabetical order, each hadith followed by his grade and the book of his where he examined it; its companion is Da'if al-Jami' al-Saghir wa-Ziyadatuh; in the third edition it counts 8,231 hadiths, 3,273 of them from the Ziyada.
