Summary

The Assabile archive lists this programme among Omar Abdelkafy's audio lessons, with twenty-seven episodes. 1 He opens the first episode at the start of the blessed month, addressing viewers 'from the screen of Dubai Television', 2 3 and says its subject is the gravest matter for every Muslim man and woman: repentance, since every child of Adam errs. 4 5 He later calls his subject 'al-munjiyat', the things by which the servant is saved. 6 The episodes are short, from about fifteen to twenty-five minutes.

Episode 1: repentance

  • He divides people into three groups with respect to sin. 7 8
  • He puts the Muslims at about one billion three hundred million, holds that they should take humanity by the hand towards guidance, and that no Arab is better than a non-Arab except by piety. 9 10 11
  • He says a minor sin does not stay minor when persisted in (see minor sins). 12
  • He tells the story of the man of the Children of Israel who killed ninety-nine people, whom a worshipper turned away from repentance and a scholar advised to leave the land of sin. 13 14 15
  • He gives the advice to one who would disobey God: disobey Him outside His dominion, do not eat of His provision, and disobey Him where He does not see you. 16 17 18 19
  • He says one sign that repentance has not been accepted is that the servant still rejoices in a sin when he gets the chance. 20 21

Episode 2: sin in the believer's heart

  • He says the believer sees his sin as a mountain about to fall on him. 22
  • He names God's three blessings: bringing into being, sustaining, and guidance. 23
  • He likens minor sins to drops of water on stone, citing a simile of al-Ghazali, and says that sins, once gathered, veil the heart from its Lord like a house cut off from sunlight. 24 25 26 27 28
  • He mentions that the slinking whisperer slinks away when the servant remembers his Lord. 29
  • He relates Adam's disobedience in eating from one tree among very many, and God's turning to him in forgiveness. 30 31
  • He says that whoever is slowed by his deeds is not hurried on by his lineage, even if he says he is of the Prophet ﷺ's family. 32
  • He says that among the signs of accepted repentance is that obedience becomes light for the servant, and that the hypocrite in the mosque is like a sparrow in a cage. 33 34 35

Episode 3: the secret and degrees of repentance

  • He mentions that Paradise is surrounded by hardships. 36
  • He says that one who grasps the secret of repentance looks at God's decree and His veiling of him, and relates that Ali, after applying the hadd to a thief, said God would not have exposed him the first time. 37 38 39
  • He distinguishes the repentance of ordinary people, which is giving up the sin and then doing many good deeds, from the repentance of the elect. 40 41
  • He mentions that Hudhayfa held the names of the hypocrites of Medina, and that Umar asked him after Abu Bakr's funeral whether he was one of them. 42 43 44
  • He speaks of envy and what it brings upon the envier. 45 46

Episode 4: the supplication for worry and grief

  • He mentions that, according to the books of sira, the Prophet never suffered a headache or fever until his final illness. 47
  • He teaches viewers the supplication for worry and grief and asks them to write it down, mentions that God removes the worry of whoever says it and replaces it with joy, and then explains its phrases. 48 49 50 51 52
  • He warns against injustice in inheritance, and mentions that the Prophet refused to witness an unequal gift among children. 53 54 55
  • He says the people of Paradise neither fear tomorrow nor grieve over the past. 56
  • He recommends surat Yusuf to the worried, and tells what Yusuf went through, from his brothers' envy to the rule of Egypt. 57 58 59 60

Episode 5: the fruits of sin

  • He mentions Paradise surrounded by hardships and the Fire surrounded by desires. 61 62
  • He relates the devil's whispering to Adam and Eve about the tree of eternity, and their leaving the Garden. 63 64 65
  • He relates that Yusuf asked his fellow prisoner to mention him to the king and stayed some years in prison; he holds that God trained him through trial, and describes him as managing the famine crisis as 'crisis management' is taught today. 66 67 68 69 70
  • Among the fruits of sin he lists the truth becoming hidden from the sinner and his heart being corrupted, time contracting and losing its blessing, and hatred being placed for him on earth. 71 72 73 74 75
  • He says that when the unlawful enters the lawful it scatters it. 76

Episode 6: what corrupts the heart

  • He mentions what the scholars gathered of the things that corrupt the heart (see hardness of heart). 77
  • He speaks of praying on time and answering the call to prayer. 78 79 80
  • He censures knowledge not acted upon, and deeds without sincerity or following the Prophet's example. 81 82 83 84
  • He describes the prayer of the humble one who prays as if it were his last, with the angel of death behind him. 85 86
  • He relates the hadith of the card bearing the testimony of faith that outweighs the scrolls of sins. 87 88 89
  • He relates the account of Abu al-Dahdah, who lent his orchard to God. 90 91
  • He says that when his wife treats him badly he tells himself he is not right with God. 92
  • He says that in religion one looks to those better than oneself and in worldly things to those with less. 93

Episode 7: happiness and humility

  • He asks what happiness is, and answers that the happy one is he who finds happiness in his religion and makes others happy. 94 95 96
  • He describes the Prophet's humility: he sat among his Companions without being singled out, and reassured a man who trembled in awe of him. 97 98 99
  • He speaks of death and burial, likening this world to a rider who shades himself under a tree and then rides on. 100 101 102 103
  • He says that charity does not diminish wealth. 104
  • He urges writing a will. 105 106 107
  • He says that true scholars grow in humility as God raises them in knowledge and rank. 108 109

Episode 8: obstacles on the way

  • He says that the human devil is more dangerous than the jinn devil. 110
  • Among the obstacles he names the wife who broadcasts her husband's faults and belittles him before the children, and the husband who makes no allowance (see rights of spouses). 111 112 113
  • He faults turning Ramadan into a month of food and banquets, and counts among the wisdoms of fasting that one comes to feel the hunger of the hungry. 114 115 116
  • He cites the hadith 'each of you is a shepherd' on responsibility. 117 118
  • He says that a child fed on doubtful and unlawful earnings rebels, and warns against the friend who gives no sincere counsel and the partner who is not fair. 119 120 121
  • He cites the hadith that whoever is awarded his brother's right is given only a piece of fire. 122 123
  • He tells the tale of the prince and the pomegranate juice: when he intended injustice the blessing dwindled, and when he gave up the intention it returned. 124 125 126 127 128

Episode 9: patience

  • He says that the sweetness of the fruit of patience eases the bitterness of pain. 129 130
  • He says patience is mentioned in the Qur'an in sixteen ways, and lists among them: the command to it, God's special companionship with the patient, their reward without measure, the good tidings given them, the guarantee of victory, their being the people of firm resolve, and that leadership in religion is attained through patience and certainty. 131 132 133 134 135 136 137
  • He relates the hadith of the man who prayed hastily, whom the Prophet told 'go back and pray, for you have not prayed', and then taught him to be still in each movement. 138 139
  • He divides patience into patience in obedience, patience in keeping from sin and patience under God's trials, and then into patience by God, for God and with God. 140 141 142 143

Episode 10: the degrees of patience and the bridges of the Sirat

  • He says patience has three degrees, the first being patience in keeping from sin. 144 145
  • He tells the wronged person not to avenge himself but to leave his case to God: to spend the night wronged is better than to spend it a wrongdoer, and God's eye does not sleep. 146 147 148 149
  • He mentions what the scholars say of seven bridges on the Sirat at which the servant is questioned: oneness of God, then prayer, fasting, zakat, pilgrimage, enjoining good and forbidding wrong, and the wrongs done to others. 150 151 152 153 154 155
  • He holds that someone who repeats the pilgrimage every year would do better to spend the money marrying young people who cannot afford it, since the obligation comes first; this is his view. 156 157
  • He urges doing work well and perfecting acts of obedience, and asks what blessing there is in the salary of one who works only minutes. 158 159 160
  • He names Ibn Sina, Ibn Rushd, al-Farabi and al-Khwarizmi, asking where their like are today. 161

Episode 11: good manners with God

  • He divides good manners into manners with God, with His Messenger and with people, and compares how the people of this world and of the next see manners. 162 163 164
  • He says God does not look at forms but at hearts and deeds, giving the example of the sewage worker who does respectable work. 165 166 167
  • He mentions the courtesy of Jesus in answering his Lord, of Abraham in ascribing illness to himself and healing to God, of al-Khidr in ascribing the damage to himself, of Adam and Eve in confessing they had wronged themselves, of Job in his complaint, and of Joseph in mentioning his release from prison but not the well. 168 169 170 171 172 173 174 175
  • Among good manners with God in prayer he names purity and keeping the gaze on the place of prostration. 176 177
  • Among good manners with the Messenger he names following him without objection and referring disputes to him. 178 179 180

Episode 12: manners of eating and of the home

  • Among table manners he mentions that the Prophet did not eat lizard though Khalid ibn al-Walid (may God be pleased with him) did, that Anas came to love gourd because the Prophet loved it, saying God's name, the young waiting until the elder reaches out, the host not overburdening himself for guests, and manners of drinking. 181 182 183 184 185 186
  • He mentions the remembrances for travel and for sleep. 187 188 189
  • He relates the account of the man among the companions of the cave who stood holding the bowl of milk until his parents woke at dawn, and mentions Jurayj and his mother, speaking of kindness to parents. 190 191 192 193
  • He mentions the courtesy of Abu Bakr in stepping back from leading the prayer when he saw the Prophet, and Abu Bakr and Umar lowering their voices after the verse came down. 194 195 196
  • He speaks of good manners in homes between spouses and children: the husband showing pleasure at what his wife offers and not insulting her before the children. 197 198 199 200
