Summary

Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik's sermon on returning from his father's burial: he went straight to the mosque, summoned the people to congregational prayer and mounted the pulpit before entering his house. 1

Details

From al-Aqd al-Farid and al-Tabari's history, the Jamhara relates that al-Walid returned from burying Abd al-Malik and, without entering his house, went to the mosque, called "the prayer is congregational," ascended the pulpit, praised God and said: "People, none delays what God has brought forward, and none brings forward what God has delayed." 1

He recalled his father's severity toward the people of falsehood and gentleness toward people of merit and religion, his raising the landmarks of Islam, his pilgrimage to this House and his raiding these frontiers against God's enemies, then enjoined: "Keep to obedience and hold fast to the community, for Satan is with the solitary and farthest from the community." 1
