Summary

Ali ibn Abi Talib (may God be pleased with him)'s sermon at Kufa after returning from the war against the Kharijites, calling the people out to fight Muawiya and the Syrians. 1

Details

He preached at Kufa on coming back from the battle of the Kharijites: "People, prepare to fight your enemy, for fighting them is the way of nearness to God and the strongest means to Him," describing the Syrians as men kept ignorant of the truth they cannot see, blinded from the Book and the religion, groping in transgression and stumbling in the pits of error. 1

He camped at al-Nakhila and ordered the men to stay in camp, resolve upon jihad and seldom visit their families until they marched against the Syrian enemy; but they slipped away into Kufa until they left him with only a handful, the camp empty, and seeing this he re-entered the city. 2 A further sermon urging them opens: "Servants of God, why is it that when I order you to march in God's way you grow heavy?" 3
