Overview

Sultan al-Ashraf Qaytbay ordered this sabil, adjoining Masjid al-Khayf at Mina, in 874 AH / 1469; Najm al-Din Umar ibn Fahd (d. 885 AH) described it eleven years later. 1

Description

Al-Haddad quotes Ibn Fahd: on the right of one entering the mosque gate, with a façade of finely worked yellow marble, a large cistern below, marble niches (taqat) from which the water was taken, four large windows on its four sides, a floor of yellow marble, a store for the sabil's vessels, and two doors, one to the road and one into the mosque. 1 A new cistern outside the mosque fed the old one inside through a well-built lime-lined channel, and a lined well opposite the gate was dug out again. 1 2

Its rarity

The author agrees with al-Harithi that its four windows are a rare example not repeated in the Hijaz or Egypt in the Mamluk period, and notes that taqat is the Hijazi term for the basins of a sabil. 2 3
