Conflict between two falsehoods

الصراع بين الباطلين

Sha'rawi holds that there is only one truth, so a battle between truth and falsehood is short, while a battle between two falsehoods lasts unless a common principle or a reconciling third party appears. In his own age, he says, the absence of such a party prolongs wars 1 2 3.

Summary

Sha'rawi holds that there is one truth. A battle between truth and falsehood is short, while a battle between two falsehoods lasts because neither side has a better claim to God's help 1 2.

Truth is one

He says that what might be called two rival truths is not so: truth is one, and a battle is either between truth and falsehood or between two falsehoods 1.

The third party

He notes that the verse on two groups of believers fighting (49:9) orders others to reconcile them, then to fight the aggressor, then to act with fairness. He holds that this reconciling party is missing from the wars of his age, so they last 2.

What remains

He holds that God leaves falsehood's partisans to fight among themselves, so that elements of good remain in the world for someone to notice. He takes this as God's mercy toward the worlds 3.

Not yet checked

This is Sha'rawi's reading of the wars of his time and has not been checked against historical sources. The academic view and any non-Sunni view have not been checked.

Biting and the liability for injury it causes (add)

In the lexicon, add is gripping a thing with the teeth and holding it. If a person bites another without right and a wound results, the biter must pay the damages for the wound, assessed as a just award by experts. If one man bites another's hand and the bitten man pulls it free so that the biter's front teeth fall out, most jurists hold that there is no liability, relying on a prophetic judgement in such a case; the Shafi'is limit this to a bitten man who chose the easiest means of release, and the preferred Maliki view requires compensation.
