The poor and the workerEthics and character
Overview
Shaykh Shaltut holds that though wealth is owned in its owners' names, the right of benefit from it is shared between them and the poor and the public interest 1. Exploiting the needy man's need — lending him at interest — is an absolute prohibition: the rich man would lie in perpetual ambush for people's needs, growing wealth without work credited to society 23. He cites "the Muslim is the Muslim's brother — he does not wrong him nor hand him over": to leave one's brother hungry and naked while able to feed and clothe him is to hand him over.
