Definition
Umm al-furukh is a named case in inheritance with a husband, a mother, two sisters of the full or paternal side, and two or more uterine siblings. It is named for the many shares that rise in it, like a bird surrounded by its young. 1 It is also called al-balja', for its clarity, and al-shurayhiyya, after the judge Shurayh, in whose time it arose; some say the name applies to any case that rises to ten. 1
Shares
The husband takes a half, the two full or paternal sisters take two thirds, the mother takes a sixth, and the uterine siblings take a third; the total is ten, and the base is six by the majority view. 2
