Algiers enters Ottoman sovereignty (1519)

دخول الجزائر تحت السيادة العثمانية (٩٢٥هـ/١٥١٩م)

1519 CE · 925 AH

Algiers

In early Dhu'l-Qa'da 925/October–November 1519 the notables of Algiers, at Khayr al-Din's order, sent the jurist Ahmad b. Qadi to Sultan Selim I with a letter (Topkapı archive no. 4656) asking to bind the city to the Ottoman state. Selim answered with the rank of beylerbey, artillery and 2,000 Janissaries; his name entered the pulpits and the coinage, and Algiers became the first North African province under Ottoman sovereignty — an entry al-Salabi stresses was by the inhabitants' appeal, not against their will 1.

Summary

Algiers' formal entry under Ottoman sovereignty in 1519 — the first of the North African provinces 2.

The letter

At Khayr al-Din's order, the people of Algiers sent an embassy under the jurist Abu al-Abbas Ahmad b. Qadi to Sultan Selim I, bearing a letter dated early Dhu'l-Qa'da 925 (26 October – 3 November 1519) in the name of the city's qadis, khatibs, ulema, imams, merchants and notables — the document preserved in the Topkapı archive as no. 4656 and translated by Abd al-Jalil al-Tamimi 3.

The answer

Selim at once granted Khayr al-Din the rank of beylerbey, making him commander-in-chief of the province's armed forces as the sultan's representative, and sent artillery and two thousand Janissaries, permitting any of his subjects who wished to sail to Algiers with Janissary privileges. Selim's name entered the pulpits and the coinage. Al-Salabi stresses that the troops entered by the inhabitants' appeal, not as a conquest against their will 2.

Capture of the Peñón of Algiers (1529)

In 1529 Khayr al-Din took the Spanish Peñón off Algiers after a twenty-day bombardment, storming it with troops landed by 45 ships and capturing its commander and senior officers — the founding act, in al-Salabi's account, of the Ottoman eyalet of Algiers.
