Reported advice to Ali by Ibn Abbas and al-Mughira on keeping or removing Uthman's governors

656 CE · 35 AH† †

† Hijri date derived by computation from the Gregorian/Julian date; it may differ from the transmitted date by a day or two.

The book sets out reports that give Ibn Abbas and al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba opposing counsel to Ali after his pledge: keep Uthman's governors until they pledge, or remove them and give Basra and Kufa to Talha and al-Zubayr. Ali refused to keep them. The book rejects these reports for weak chains and confused texts and calls them hypothetical 123.

Opinions on the question

The question: Did al-Mughira and Ibn Abbas advise Ali to keep Uthman's governors?

First opinion · Sunni tradition (the museum's frame)Main reference

The book rejects the reports: their chains are weak, their texts conflict with more reliable reports (most of those governors had left their provinces for Mecca), and they portray al-Mughira as a flatterer, which does not fit his conduct. It holds that appointing new governors better served the people's pledge {cite:sallabi-ali-vol1 p. 354}{cite:sallabi-ali-vol1 p. 355}.

Academic viewSecondary opinion

The book's rejection leans on Abd al-Hamid Ali's study of Ali's caliphate and on the book on governorships (footnotes, pp. 353-354); no separate contrary academic verdict is quoted (needs_source) {cite:sallabi-ali-vol1 p. 353}.

Other viewOther opinion

The book reports that modern writers relied on these reports to impugn the senior Companions of the shura in their religion, justice and trust, which it calls a flawed foundation. It also reports readers who read Ali's dismissals as weakness of political judgement and others who read them as firmness for the truth {cite:sallabi-ali-vol1 p. 354}{cite:sallabi-ali-vol1 p. 355}.

Ali appoints the sons of al-Abbas and Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr as governors

Ali gave the provinces to several sons of his cousin al-Abbas: Abdallah in Basra, Ubaydallah in Yemen and Bahrain, Qutham in Mecca and al-Ta'if, Tammam in Medina, and with them Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr, his step-son, in Egypt. The book sets this among a list of forty-one governors and holds that Ali and Uthman both appointed kin when their competence was clear, not for kinship alone.
